Moving On!

Since my last post I have handed in my Skirt and Shirt project and also my Drape garment ...in hindsight I loved doing these projects I just wish I would have worked harder or a few points so I have wrote these down.

But since I last posted I have had the summer off and its been amazing but im ready to come back to University, I'm ready for Fashion and Textiles Design Year 2 ...(Wow! that feels weird)

In this year we first do a Autumn/Winter coat with notmally a wool fabric and a silky lining which looks amazing if done really well ...the wool I'm hoping is easy to work with but silk is hard and I'm sercetly not looking forward to that.

The second part of the year (which begins after Christmas) is a knitted jumper. This I cant wait gor because I love a oversize knitted jumper with some jeans and chunky boots. I already have loads of idea for that. But as I am im sure people on the course are excited for different things/areas on the course, we all have dislikes and likes.

Uni Life: First day at my new Placement

I have been talking to people at Hillsborough college (as my mum works there) and I decided to ask and see if I could do a voluntary placement there and they agreed so I decided to do Arts and Crafts with them and this week I did Batik with the students.

I got to do my own with one of the students so I draw the wax on the fabric and just did a pattern the whole way across.
(Unfortunately I didn't get a photo of it before we painted it)

Then Greg (One of the students) ask if he could help me with the ink painting on top of the wax.
(This is me and greg painting with the ink)

This is the final outcome me and greg achieved.

I really enjoyed doing this lesson with them and really look forward to next week.

I was asked by the tutor if in the future I would like to do a lesson and plan it out and do some activity with them, I'm really looking forward to the future with the class.

Uni Life: Fabric Flower Making

I took inspiration from these flowers.

And decided to try and make something similar with fabric.

Here is what I used...

Some background fabric.

Three different sizes of petals cut out of fabric.

A glue gun.

And the last thins is different fabrics and scissors.

This is what I started with and decided to stick with this cream fabric. Then I just carried on with the flower by gluing petals  on top of each other and build them up.

So this is what I finished with and I really like the outcome of the process. At the end I decided it needed something more so I then stitched the sequins on.

To evaluate... I really like this processes and want to try some more and do more projects Like this.

Uni Life! - Printing with Apples and Oranges

What I used:
- 1 apple
- 1 orange
- a couple pages of A3 paper
- I also printed on some calico
- gouache prints
- a few paint brushes
- a pot of water to clean your brushes

Oranges:
As you can see here I cut the fruit in half and coveredit in paint and printed with you would a stamp. (I did the same with the apple.)

I really loved the print the orange gave me.

Apples:
I loved the print a apple gave too.

I also mixed up some colours and printed with that I really like this process and think it looks really good.

These are all the different prints I got.

Uni Life! - Knitting!

Knitting try outs...

I also decided to try doing some Pom poms. I really like these but I'd like to try out some smaller and bigger ones.

Here and this image below you can see, I decided to try out this bobble stitch.

I really enjoyed doing this and I think knitting for some is classed as 'old fashioned' but I think it can be modern.

Uni Life! - Natural Dyes

So I decide to try out dying some fabric with natural dyes. I looked online and found out Beetroot, Onion Skins and Saffron worked best. So I tried it out...

This is Beetroot Boiling to let all the colour come out.

This is the onion boiling.

After letting the beetroot and onion boil in pans for about 1 hour to 1 hour and a half. I took them out.

I then wet my silk, this lets the fabric take in the dyes better.

I then put the fabric (silk) into the different natural dyes. As you can see below and above.

I let these (above and below) soak in the beetroot and onion skin liquid for about 1 hour.

I then removed them from the beetroot and onion skin liquid and gave them a rinse (above and below).

Then I decided to try out the saffron.
Then I added the fabric into the saffron and left it to soak for 30 minutes.

Afterwards I took the silk out the liquid and gave it a rinse.

I then decided to warm up the saffron liquid to see if it made a difference I also added abit more saffron.

This is the silk in the boiled saffron.

Then I took it out and gave it a rinse.

Here are all the died silks drying.

I really enjoyed doing this and really like the outcome. I think I should have used fresh beetroot instead of pickled beetroot, I hope to try using fresh beetroot. Overall I enjoyed the process/ project.

Uni Life! - Skirt and Shirt!

My shirt and skirt project this is what I made.

Here is my skirt and shirt that I made.

I decided to role up the sleeve because I really like this effect on shirts. Here you can also see my hand embroidered buttons I really loved this addition to the shirt.

Here and the image below you can see the hand embroidery I did. I decided to do the buttons and the flowers in the pleat the same colours so they matched I really like this element.

Here you can see a swing tag I made this shows what work is mine and how it would look if it was maybe in a shop.

This was my four garments on the rail ready to be marked the four I had were my mock up skirt and shirt to see if I liked how they looked and if I wanted to change anything on them. Although at first I didn't manage my time very well so at the end of the project was a mad rush to get it finished I really love what I came out with.

To evaluate I really enjoyed making and see it all come together but I wish I would have spent more time on my sample work.

Uni Life! - Drape

These are all the front and back's of my drape try outs at University. I have never done drape before so this scared me a bit. But by the time I finished I really liked trying out different ways to drape and creating different shapes with the fabric.
