My initial ideas for the project of "All the fun of the fair" were to use a ferries wheel, games & game stalls as I felt these images represent a fun fair the most. To document my research I decided to use a sketchbook, this shows all the research, ideas and development I did in the holidays. My first idea was to use a spider diagram; I think this is a more interesting way to show my ideas.
My methods of research took time and lots of scrolling on the internet, and sketching. We also went on a trip to Scarborough to do some primary research. We walked up & down the seafront where we took photos of the relevant images that we needed for this Fun fair project. These were the shadowing, shapes & colours of the beach & sea. We also looked at old & new arcade games which showed different images & colours that we could add to our project.
I believe I managed my time well, sometimes I got stressed because I was doing most of the research at home in the 6 weeks holiday and didn’t know if the research was enough. Mostly I would be thinking how I could do my work & then spend most of my Sundays putting it all together. Sundays in our house are always quiet and the best time to work.
For my artist research I looked at Daniel Heath because he is a designer of fun fairs using textiles. Daniel produced some screen printed pillows and I liked these because they were very bright and the pattern showed up very well. During my research I could not find anyone else I really liked, but Daniel Heath seemed to only do bedding.
I approached my tracing with care and concern because I knew this would be turned into my screen so didn’t want to rush it. I took inspiration from my mood boards, visual sheets and internet research. But as I didn't want to make my tracing and screen print too busy I used a lot of the same objects just in different sizes. I did some Batik samples on paper but most samples like devore and puff binder were on fabrics. I liked using puff binder the best as I liked the final effect it had on the fabric.
My experience of the sewing machine was both good and bad as I tried two sewing machines to see which I could use easier. I first tried the Bernini and I liked it I just couldn’t work it, to me it was a little confusing. Then I tried the Brother machine and it was a lot easier to use. I liked using the Brother as I could use the foot peddle easier and get the right speed I wanted. I also found it more comfortable to operate. When I did my sewing machine testers I used the brother sewing machine for my straight stitch/different stitching technique sample and I used the Bernini sewing machine for my free machining sample. I found the layer and burn difficult as I had to use the sewing machine without the foot on, and had to have the feed dogs down, this made it a lot more difficult to control and meant most of the lines weren't very neat at all. For this technique I used a wooden hoop, organza and bondaweb.
I loved my experience in the print room as it let me create different things and use and make different things. I used lots of materials like, calico, Devore, batik, puff binder, brown paper, masking tape, newspaper, tissue paper, cartridge paper and found fabric. Also while I was in the print room I used things like a pressure washer, fabric, a screen, a squeegee, wax, an iron, pigment ink, procian dyes and brusho ink. I loved being in the print room as I could practise my ideas instead of thinking of what to do. Another reason why my experience in the print room went well was because I could just create my ideas for my samples there and then if I wanted as all the materials were there for me to try out and use.
In the whole project I used a lot of experimentation, but in the textile workshop is where it really came out. I experimented a lot as I haven't used the textile workshop before apart from in my first year but that was only one quick lesson. But the things I enjoyed most were screen printing, batik and puff binder I liked using these the most because the puff binder stands out and makes the pattern look 3D. I also experimented with the sewing machine too as I haven't even used one before. So this whole experience has been a massive learning curve.
I enjoyed lots of processes in this project; I mostly enjoyed puff binder, batik and using the sewing machine. The reason why I like this so much is these are the most unusual techniques. But I didn't enjoy the layer and burn as I couldn't control the sewing machine very well and I couldn't get the pattern I wanted. Also I used embroidery thread on the sewing machine and as I was using the sewing machine without the foot or the feed dogs the embroidery thread kept snapping so this is why I didn't really like using this technique but I did think it was good to learn how to do it.
I manage my work load in the summer holidays by dedicating every Sunday to working on my sketch book I also found and thought of ideas though the week. But when I got back to college it didn't go so well due to the death of my grandma this meant I took a week off for bereavement. However I catch up and now I'm back on track and very proud of the work I have achieved.
