Uni Life! - Screen Printing

 

Yesterday at the Hub I screen printed. I draw a picture last and gave it to the technician at the Hub she then exposed it onto a screen for me.   

 

This is how my screen turned out I like the hand drawn look it has and I also like how I incorporated the honeycomb shape for bee and the butterfly. I like the sharp straight lines oh the honeycomb and the butterfly wings just blend together. As you can see the is card and brown parcel tape going round the edges of my picture this is to prevent leaks on the print although I forgot to look before I started to print so the paint leaked on one of my prints. 

 

 

 I also mixed my own paint I went for an orange because it reminded me on the orange bee Colour. I mixed the paint myself with help from the tutor, I mixed it 50/50 paint to fabric media, the paint is to give it colour and the fabric media is to make sure that I could print screen onto fabric.   

 

 This is how one of my prints turn out I really like the faded effort. this was because the paint going through the screen had dried on it so the fresh paint was only getting through certain places and therefore giving this faded effect.

This is the print on fabric I have decided to embroider on one or two, to show different skills can be used in different ways.
I will embroider on these in the future but for now this is what they look like.

This is a close up on the middle print, I really like the hand drawn look of the print.

To evaluate I really loved doing this printing.

Uni Life! - Manufacture

 After alterations to it on the zig and waist band this was because of a previous tutor.

This is the first ever skirt I have made.

I really enjoyed making these items, it was hard at times but I have a amazing tutor at university that helped me along the way and guided me in the right way.

To evaluate next time I would like take a little more time just to get everything perfect but there should also be room to improve!  

 

 

 

Uni Life!- Wet Felting

Due to the snow I couldn't get into University, so I decided to try doing some Textiles at home. I decided to try and do some DIY wet felting. I looked on the internet and found so many ways to do wet felting at home. I found this blog post  through pinterest and decided to use this as an outline and try my own way...

This is how is did it..

1. The items I would need for this are:

 - A towel to make sure the water doesn't go everywhere

- some bubble wrap to roll up the felt in

- Obviously some felt

- A jar to take the water form the bowl to the felting  

2. then I folded the towel in half and laid it on the side the put the bubble wrap on top. afterwards I laid the felt on the bubble wrap first going top to bottom for one layer (until I could see no gaps) then from left to right (until its covered).

 

3. I then covered all the felt in water and folded the bubble wrap over.

 





 4. To make sure all the felt was wet I patted the felt.

 

 5. Then I rolled the felt and continued to roll it.

 

 6. I had to then over up the bubble wrap and stretch out the felt and roll it for another 5 minutes. This helps the fibres to lock together.

 

 7. After rolling the felting for about 10 minutes I decided to put some wholes in the top layer to give it another effect.  

8. I washed the felting in cold water to get the soap suds.

 

9. I wet felted again (here you can see the green wet felting). I then let the wet felting dry.

As you can see I have incorporated a piece of material into the green felting, I thought this might give the felting an added texture.

 

 

I really enjoyed doing this piece of textiles. This is my third attempt of this process, I plan to try it more.

Uni Life!

I decided to carry on with this blog as I love doing it and kind of missed it.

So I'm at Doncaster University doing a degree in Fashion and Textiles Design, I find it very interesting. I did textiles at college and I'm finding it very exciting learning how to draw, measure out and make clothing, it’s something at the start of the course I never thought I would enjoy but now I love it.  I also love doing the other subjects like visualisation, design, history, manufacture and business. I love this course, I love learning new things and bettering my future.

The Final Piece

My final piece is three Wall Hangings.

The first has a tie dye background with pink puff binder and normal blue infill. 

The second is fabric making for this I used 4 layers of fabric I used my sewing machine to do this then I added buttons. 

For the three'd of my wall hangings I used another tie dye like background with a purple outline and mint green and orange infill. 

I lovey final pieces and cant wait to see them in my exhibition.

These are my printing samples. I loved doing these but I don't like that some have miss printed in places.

I think this print went like this because I didn't put enough ink on the screen before I printed. 

These three samples below are puff binder and I have mixed them with pigment so they are coloured.
