FMP: Morocco Artist Research

For my Artist Research I chose two different artists. 

One being John Robshaw, he is a very inspiring man who does a lot of different pattern and his team of printers also makes all there own printing patterns/shape/stamps with some kind of wood, I think that espeically is amazing. 

My Second Artist is called Genevieve 'Nev' Levin. She is a 'small time' henna artist, who has done some amazing henna. She is one of the best henna artists I have ever seen. 

FMP: Moroccan Mood boards

These mood boards are the start of my project. 

This is my first mood board, on this mood board I used secondary research, watercolours, pencil and fine liner.

This is my Second Mood Board, on this mood board I used brown paper, masking tape, secondary research (photos), pencil and fine liner. 

 

This is my Third Mood Boards, I prefer this mood board as I got to try out a new material called guatta this is a paste like material that dry raised, it's also like henna but for material and paper. The materials I used on this mood board are Secondry research (photos), fine liner, watercolours and guatta. 

This is my fourth mood board this is inspired by my main artist John Robshaw I liked how he uses his colour. The materials on this page are Secondry research (photos), fine liner, pencil, watercolours and gouache. 

FMP: Morocco

My theme is Morocco. I want to focus mainly on Moroccan culture, paying particular attention to the architecture, the shapes, patterns, colour and textures of the buildings. Also the souks (markets) are a very inspirational as they are very colourful, the products on these markets are so different from food and drink to bright fabrics and footwear. For another part of the project I will research the Moroccan language; I will be looking into Arabic language and symbols. By doing this I could incorporate text/typography into this project. 

To document my project I will use a Sketchbook and Sheet work. In this sketchbook I'm going to put my artist research and theme research. I will try to make my sketchbook interesting: I will do this by using different techniques and materials e.g. Water colours, gouache, different types of paper, pictures and text. 

The techniques I would like to use many processes and techniques in the project, I want to use lots of processes because I think they will support my project very well. I want to use loads of different Moroccan patterns and colours. I think that batik and screen print will go very well with this project but I want to try and use more than that just like embroidery on the sewing machines. Another technique I will try is henna I will try and get some henna and do patterns on myself this will also class as research. I will ask a islamis/Muslim friend to get me some henna that she uses.

Live Brief Evaluation - Moo Designs

The primary research I got for moo designs by going to look round their shop and taking lots of photo by doing this I also got a feel for the type of clothing they sell. The secondary research I got was on avant garde this is a type of catwalk modelling that is totally over the top and not a everyday piece of clothing. I did a few illustrations drawings. As moo designs asked for monochrome with one contrasting colour, so I also research monochrome and thought what would go best and I thought oranges. 

I developed my research by thinking of where I wanted to take the project and I really wanted to use octopus tentacles especially the suckers, I thought the circles give me a really good pattern. I also decided I would love to use either oranges or blues or greens with the monochrome. 

The elements I took into my design was colour I decided on oranges with monochrome (black, grey and white). I also took the octopus suckers and tentacles into my design. I took these things because I thought they will look amazing and they will stand out.

I think the client influenced me a lot because I wouldn't have done monochrome and I wouldn't have just used one colour. I think the client influenced me a lot but I think I could have took their instruction a bit further like trying a background colour and try using different colours on my print, I also think trying different materials would have shown diversity and I could have found my print looked a lot different   on a different fabric.

I think a major constriction was that we could only use one contrasting colour but personally I would have loved to use a few colours as it may have made samples more interesting, it would also mean you could do a few very different samples and show the range of techniques you can use. 

I think personally my experimentation could have gone loads further. With my samples I stayed very simple and didn't use many techniques, I think this is because I was working to a clients brief. If I had used more techniques and tried different things (like different material) I think my designs/samples would have looked a lot better. I also think more experimentation may get me a better grade. 

The main problem I found in this project was the light fabrics that the client asked for (as it's for a spring summer garment ) moved around a lot when printing on them, this means the print would print twice and make the sample look scruffy.
I also found making the print look different and individual was really hard as the clients brief was very restrictive. I think it would of helped if I did more research into everything like invertebrate sea creatures, I would have loved to find something different.

If I didn't have any client constraints I think my design, the colours, the materials and techniques would all be different. The different types of techniques I would use were batik, puff binder and sewing into my samples. I think it would have been interesting to sew into fabrics/samples. I think my samples would have been much better and completely different if I had no constraints. I think the constraints from the client made me worry or freak out a little. I thought about my samples way to much. 

I think my artist linked really well to my work as I thought it went with my colour scheme as I chose such a bright/out there colour I thought seen as Alexander McQueen's colour scheme is corals and oranges very under the sea type thing. I love this type of fashion, the dresses with all the embellishments. I think the colours were amazing. 

I decided my design as I wanted the simple but detailed but at the end i don't think I got what I thought, I could have worked harder. I think my final design wasn't what I wanted it to be. But I must say I thought I had my tracing under control in the first few stages but near the end I wish I worked harder on it and put it more effort. I also think my design had a lot of spaces and I wish I had more detail and size variation into it. 

I don't think my final design would be easy to reproduce as my screen at the moment is not a repeat screen. This means my pattern isn't able to repeat so if it was picked I'd have to change my screen. But as I have only got three screens to print I think it would be easier then having more than three screens. 

The different processes I used though this project were printing and pigment mixing. I can across some trouble with pigment mixing because the first one I didn't test on a test piece of white cotton after the first try Katherine told me to test my colour before printing it. After testing all my colours I found it quite easy. 

Most of this project went well with the sheet work and sketchbook. I did struggle a little bit as I didn't know what to put in my sketchbook at the beginning of the project. But I do think I could have done better with my screen and samples. I would of changed my screen by making my screen more detailed. I also think the reason I didn't like my samples a lot is because they were all so similar and I did use many techniques or materials. 

My time management went ok but it wasn't brilliant as I don't think I realised how quick the project would go. I wish I would have worked on the project harder at the beginning instead of leaving it till the end. 
I don't think I used my dairy effectively as I'm new to using it. I fact some days i forgot to fill it in. I think I could have used this loads more. 

I think working with someone out of college was scary as it needed to be of a high standard because it wasn't just your name on it it was college's name too. I thought it was a great learning experience too though because this will be something we may do in university. I loved working with them but I didn't like the constraints of the live brief though. 
My satisfaction with this project are ok but I don't this is my best work. I think I could have worked harder on this project.

Samples

These are the samples I will show moo.

Print 1

 

To create this print I used my white cotton fabric and then the pigment I used black BTM as my outline and I mixed I little bit of black BTM to make a grey and then the orange is made with orange G. 

Print 2 

 

On this print I also used black BTM for the outline on this print. Then I also used the grey from print 1 and the same orange from print 1. I used white cotton for this print also. 

Print 3 

 

For this print I change my orange and dicided to mix my own I did this by mixing pink 5BTL and yellow 2G and red BB. Then I used the grey and black from print 1. I love this shade of orange but I thought it need testing and I need to try it on other material. I also used white cotton for this print I used white cotton so much for these print because I love the feel of it and it's easy to print on. 

Print 4

 

For this sample I printed on muslin but when I printed my orange outline my screen moved so it printed twice this wasn't meant to happen. The second colour on the print was the black I dicided to used it this way as I wanted to see what the colours and print would look like if you change them round. I really like this print but I don't like how it smudged. 

Print 5 

 

For this print I just tried a simple sample. So I tried just plain black BTM on muslin. 

Print 6

 

For this print I tried the black BTM outline and then I mixed a deep red/orange. I did this by mixing yellow 2G and scarlet TRL. But as you can see my screen had picked up some ink or something and there's a black/grey smudge on the fabric. I used silk for the sample. 

Print 7

 

I tried another simple sample again. I used the sample black BTM and the same grey from print 1. For this sample I used white cotton. 

Overall I liked using the thinner, lighter fabric. I liked using this fabric but it is hard to print on. 

Sheet Work for Moo Designs

Moodboards:

Mood boards and your sketchbook are the start of a project.

 

This is my first moodboards I really liked the circle shapes on the octopus legs, I also like the softness of the jellyfish but how they can also be so deadly. On this sheet I used newspaper, tissue paper, photos (secondary research) and betol pen with water.

 

This is my second Moodboard, I like the jellyfish and the starfish together and how they mix and go together. I used photos (secondary research), wayercolour and gouache. 

Costumer Board: 

 

This is my customer board this is where we either make up a customer or we choose a celeb to be a customer. This is to show who I think would buy my print, my clothing line. On this sheet I used watercolour, masking tape, photos (secondary research), black paper and brown paper. I love how this sheet looks and how it all comes together.

Artist Research Sheet: 

 

This is my artist research sheet i did it on Alexander McQueen. I did it like this because I think these dress look a little like coral. I love the orange on these dresses too. I hope to use a orange like this on my final samples. On this sheet I used photos, watercolours and fine liner. 

Visuals: 

 

This is my visual sheet I wanted to try a sheet with the starfish so much and mixed the jeweled top snail  with some of the octopus suckers. On this sheet I used gouache and watercolour. 

 

For this Visual Sheet I dicided to mix all three together. I didn't like this sheet as much as the others. I used watercolour on this sheet. I used watercolour on this sheet. 

Development: 

 

This is my first development sheet I really like this sheet. I used watercolour and a fine liner. I think this is one of my best sheets. On this sheet I explored colour and which I preferred and liked the best. 

 

This was the final sheet I did I love how this came together. This is how I want my sheet to look. 

On this sheet I used watercolour, gouache and fine liner. 

Moo Designs

For this project we have to create a length of printed fabric.

The main things in the brief: 

- The print has to be Invertebrate Sea Creatures 

- It also has to be monochrome with one other contrasting colour 

- It's got to be suitable for spring/summer 2014

Invertebrate means I creature without a spin, in this case it's a sea creature without a spin like a jellyfish or a starfish or a octopus. 

Monochrome means just back and white or it could be grey and white or grey and black. 

Contrasting Colour means a colour that is a contrast (bright and stands out) to monochrome.
