When we started with this project the first thing I did was was primary research so I used some picture of castles and old buildings and rusty garden tools for my Manmade primary research, for my nature primary research I used pictures of flowers.
At this time in the project I didn't know weather I wanted to go with manmade or nature so I did a mood board on manmade and nature then decided on nature and did a third mood board. So I have focused on nature as I think there's lots of pattern and I prefer the nature side of the project because I thought personally I could do more with it.
Some of the other research I did was I took picture and observational drawings from the set up we did in class. I was did some stretches of flowers with watercolours. For my secondary research I have wallpaper samples, photos of technology and I also collected other images of natural things.
I developed my research by exploring natural things like insects, flowers, trees and leaves I thought these would like good on a screen as they all look good together and they are all relevant to each other. I also looked for artists that use insect and found a few artists which I used in my sketchbook.
I decided on my colour theme by using the colours I thought would compliment each other, I ended with oranges, reds, greens, browns and yellows. So this was my colour theme. Another way I decided I used colours that I thought were natural and would combine with my nature theme well.
In my sketchbook I did I page on Craig Fellows in does insect prints on many things like purse, ties, notebook, cushions and gift wrap. I love the work of Craig Fellows as he uses the same print in one of his collections but he uses it for many different things. He shows you can use one print for assorts of things. He inspired me a lot with my print as he has very bold prints and I think mine was bold too. I think I choose a artists that supported my work very well I think this because I chose to use a screen print that was as busy and as similar as some of the things he does in his collections.
We have used many techniques in this project like Knitting, Weaving (loom), Weaving (Peg), Felting (wet), Needle Felting and Weaving (cardboard loom). I found most of these methods easy and like them but there was only one I didn't like that was Wet Felting, I didn't like this because it's time consuming although I did like the final result. The technique I liked that most was We ing this is my I chose a weave to go with my final piece. I found the other techniques fun but some I found difficult. The technique I found most difficult was knitting as I kept pulling my wool too tight, so it was hard to try and finish my sample.
The elements I chose to take through to my design were the insects and leaves. I chose these because I thought they blended well together and loved the way they looked together. I also took the colour theme through to my design as I have used greens, oranges, reds and browns.
I did experiment with the different colour on my print and brusho on my sheet work but I think I could have used techniques from my last project like batik and colour background I could have also try different paints for different background and samples. I think this is why in my design meeting my group chose one with a watercolour background I think if I would experimented more they might not have chose that sample. This is one of my regrets of this project is that I didn't experiment with my samples. But I did experiment in my technical work, I had never used most of the technical samples like wet felting and weaving on the loom and cardboard loom.
The problems I encountered in this project were finding artists, lining up my final piece and what direction to take my project in. The problem that annoyed my most was lining up my final piece because I think it would have look much better if it had lined up properly. Another problem I encountered in this project was when I was knitting my sample it always got really tight so I asked either Kat or my mum to help to loosen it up. I solved these problems by problem solving and thinking of a way to get round it, I think my final piece looks good as it you can't see where my print starts and ends so it all blends together really well. With my knitting sample I tried using bigger needles and then my sample came out fine.
I chose artists by looking around on Pinterest and Google for insect screen print artists and designers, I also found other designers and artists like a wire artists who made insects out of wire. Craig Fellow influenced my work a lot as he had a busy print just like mine.
My design meeting went really well they all really liked my work. This helped me as I was really worried about my samples as I didn't experiment very well. When they all saw my samples they liked them and as soon as they saw the 9th sample they loved it and chose it as my final piece I didn't think it would look good as a metre length of wallpaper but now I've done it I think I would have chose the wrong one I think the brusho/watercolour background really makes my print stand out and having a plain background wouldn't have done anything for my print.
I went about producing my final piece by just getting on with it this is how I approach all my work because what's the worst that an happend I would have to start and again and learn from my mistake, so I go on and did my first print then second didn't print as well to I spoke to Catherine our print room Tech and she thought I would have to wash and dry my screen in between every print so I did that and everything went fine. I did use a different technique, as I wanted all the colour to blend together and not just go into strikes I asked Catherine again how I would get this and she told me to splatter my pigment on the screen.
And then print like so.
I thought this was a really good idea and took this all through my final piece.
I decided to produce a cardboard weave with my final piece as I tried the cardboard weave and I loved it I liked how it all can together and I thought I was just made to go with the rest of my project, I think it all flows well and I really loved the technique. I used exactly the same things for this as in the sample weave but I change the holding wool colour from red to grey just so it would blend in with the green nod browns easier.
I used lots of different processes this includes printing with brusho and watercolour. I also use processes like screen print, sketchbook pages, knitting and weaving.
I think most thing ended going well but the thing that I think went the worst was my final piece as it didn't line up properly but I think it looked okay in the end.
With my time management I think I did really well as I tried to do as much as I could at college but if I had too much to do I would bring it home, my only regret is I wish I had done more sketches and primary research. I think I have improved in this project the reason for this I think is that I managed my time and kept to it. Although I wish I would have dedicated time to my blog.
My blog I think I did okay but I didn't use it effectively I think because I didn't keep up with it I think if I had done it straight away it would have been better.
My project overall I think of went well I'm proud of what I have achieved in this project and glad I have done what I thought was best and been more independent in my work. I think I have improved loads in this last project. I could have improved my blog and time management with that. But I'm still happy with what I have done with the rest.
